This book is about early academic careers, from PhD to first post (with all the teaching, politics, planning and identity questions in between). It's written primarily for doctoral researchers and early career colleagues, but also for more seasoned academics who want to reflect on how we support the next generation. The book draws analogies from football. Like football, academic life is about more than the final score or the job title on your profile. The book tries to look at the full game, namely the positions you occupy over time (research, teaching, service, engagement etc), the tactics you use when the field is not level, the decisions you make when the rules and expectations keep shifting, but also the personal impact that the game can have.
